Set Design in Light
What a dream to have the client pick the design you secretly favored from the very beginning of the design process!
I got to draw in light for this music video for the talented YDE and her track “Stopped buying Diamonds”.
The dynamic pitch by Neon Cat Productions, saw Yde playing several versions of herself, eventually making up each member of her own band.
The lighting was programmed by the incredible Danit Sigler of Neoncat productions, DP and editor - one half of the team behind this and many other incredibly creative projects I have been lucky enough to work on.
Securing the astera tubes invited thinking outside of the box! I did not want to clutter the space with light stands, plus needed something versatile enough to accommodate and the angles and heights of the design. A week prior to this job, I was shopping for retail sorry fixtures in a prop house. A black clothing store style metal frame came to mind. We attached a few panels together creating a back wall, which, once lit, became barely visible against the black walls of the studio. With a boat load of cable ties, each tube was secured to the grid. A smattering of lights were secured vertically from the lighting grid above the stage and some to mirror sat on stands around the circular steel deck staging, with a few tubes splayed out on the floor.
The existing studio dance floor, provided just enough sheen to mirror the patterns, and the lighting grid had plenty of space for the overhanging tubes.
Favourite moment - sitting on the floor with the team, watching the rehearsal run through of the lights in action, filling the space and reflecting off the floor - goosebumps!
